Academy Information
Academy Aims
The sport academy programme at Sussex Downs College Lewes aims to provide opportunities at the highest level of sporting performance as well as improving the standard of sport within the College as a whole. The academies enable talented athletes to receive high level coaching and competition alongside their academic studies. The academies also allow recreational athletes to train and play their sport regularly, with some progressing to a higher level of performance. The academies allow young sportsmen and women the opportunity to develop their coaching skills whilst gaining a recognised coaching qualification.
The sport academy will provide an excellent experience and will also be really useful for students applying for University and/or job applications as the sport academy requires students to display high levels of commitment and dedication and they will enhance their curriculum vita by completing a sport specific coaching qualification.
At Sussex Downs College Lewes we offer four sport academies:
Academy Requirements
Applications are invited from individuals who already excel in competitive sport and/or demonstrate the necessary commitment and potential within their chosen sport. Existing club/school or county playing experience would be an advantage on the sport academy courses. This is in addition to the standard college entry requirements for the students chosen programme of study.
All students who join the Academy, will be required to enter into an agreement with the College, to ensure attendance, performance in the classroom, attitude to learning and personal presentation are exemplary at all times. Students who join an academy will be asked to take part in a trial before being accepted on the programme.
Academy Focus
The Four Sport Academies will focus on five key areas:
- Development of individual & team skills
- Enhancement of personal fitness & nutrition
- Understanding of strategies & tactics of the game
- Competing and performing at the highest level possible both individually and as a team
- Basic principles of coaching
